You can read the whole site without an account and without signing in. This page describes what happens when you do sign in.
What we store
Your email address. It is how you sign in. It is stored separately from your public profile and is never shown to other members or returned by the public parts of the site.
Your handle, and anything you choose to add - location, skills, roles. These are public. Your handle is the only identity shown next to what you post.
Sign-in requests. When you ask for a sign-in link we record the address it was sent to, the time, and the IP address the request came from. The IP is there to stop someone flooding the site with sign-in mail; it is not attached to your profile or to anything you post.
Sessions. When you sign in we store a session record with the browser user-agent string, so you can stay signed in.
What you post. threads, progress, comments, typed actions and any media you upload. All of it is public.
How long
Sign-in links expire 15 minutes after they are sent and work exactly once. Sessions expire 60 days after you sign in. Your profile and what you have posted stay until you remove them or close your account.
Traffic measurement
We record which pages are opened: the path, the country your request came from, the referring site, how long the response took and its status code. This carries no account id, no IP address and no cookie, so it cannot be traced back to you. There are no third-party analytics or advertising trackers on the site.
Cookies
One cookie holds your session so you stay signed in; it cannot be read by scripts in the page. A second short-lived cookie carries a one-off message such as "you are signed in" and clears itself. No advertising or tracking cookies.
Who else sees it
The site runs on Cloudflare, which serves the pages and stores the data. Email is sent through a mail provider so sign-in links can reach you. We do not sell your data and we do not share it for advertising.
Your choices
You can change your handle and profile, and sign out of your account, from your account page. To get a copy of what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted, write to roy@techguyverlabs.org. Deleting an account removes your profile and sign-in records.
